Inspiration for the workplace: ensuring best practice and consistency

Heather Human uses Inspiration in her role as Business Operations Manager at the University of Leicester to help create resilience, adopt best practice and ensure consistency across the team. Heather works in the college finance hub overseeing a team of 17, who have each come from individual departments within the college, meaning there is varied understanding of processes, roles, policies and regulations. She relies on Inspiration to build a cohesive team with confidence in their roles, and describes herself as “an unofficial ambassador of Inspiration!”

Detailed mind map on team management cohesion and culture

Heather was introduced to Inspiration by colleagues when she started 10 months ago. “It’s really intuitive to use and you can quickly and easily get up and running with it and start producing maps and outlines”. She has now created many mind maps and process maps using Inspiration, which have helped with:

  • team communication
  • demonstrating and streamlining work processes
  • acknowledging and solving discrepancies
  • guiding the team through their different workloads and various tasks
  • creating process documents using Outline View

Inspiration helps with visualizing the big picture: “I’m a do-it-in-pictures kind of person! So, I do find the visualization really useful, and I like being able to add extra bits as and when I think of things.” Heather mainly creates text-based diagrams and maps, with branches showing relationships between processes and tasks.

Heather discussed using Inspiration to capture and collate notes and information to share with colleagues. The digital format is more effective and easily changeable than the previously used post-it notes, especially with an increase in hybrid working.

There is a Management in Practice training programme at the college where Heather demonstrates the benefits of Inspiration for management: "I think Inspiration is great; I have been telling everyone who will listen! Dare I say it’s a simple but effective bit of software! It does just what it needs to do."
